NATURAL BORN LEADERS BRING HUGE SOUND TO TINY DESK, RELEASE FOLLOW-UP ENTRY TO LAST YEAR’S (ALMOST) WINNING VIDEO

Watch the NPR Featured Group Perform “The Evils” Live in an Antique Warehouse

Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - Asheville, North Carolina thrift warehouse The Regeneration Station played host to local neo-soul outfit Natural Born Leadersthis weekend as it turned into a temporary film set for their latest music video “The Evils.”

The quintet, who were among last year’s top contestants for NPR Music’sacclaimed Tiny Desk video contest, deliver an empowering, lyric-driven anthem in their reprise. With a name like Natural Born Leaders, it's no surprise that social commentary acts as a stand-out motif in their discography. In “The Evils,” lead singer “Mad” Mike Martinez expounds:

“I guess you can be the problem
And the solution
And the pollution
You can be so much
You could be the thing that the world was missing
You could be gifted
Don’t limit your vision
Don’t settle for nothing
Take what you put in...

...I thought I was living
Sorting through visions
Not all paths are the given
Not all blacks do the killing
Not all whites are the villain
Maybe extensions of one
Grown with the blessings of one
I see between the lines of fine
I see between confines of mind
Out of body
Out of limits
Out of s**** to give
And out of tongues to bite for minutes”

With a new track to showcase - and a sophomore release underway - Natural Born Leaders bring a fresh groove to their familiar ways, weaving jazz lines between spoken word into a musical tapestry all their own.

With national traction stirring, Natural Born Leaders remember the grassroots connections that have helped propelled them forward. This gratitude for their community is so simply and perfectly discernable in the new track’s opening line: “big ups to my people.”
